Ishami Foundation Board of Trustees
Unpaid Voluntary Role

The Ishami Foundation is a registered charity that draws on the experiences of genocide survivors to help us all connect to our common humanity. Operating in the UK and Rwanda, Ishami uses the power of sport and storytelling to build equality, tolerance and lasting peace. We work with survivors, young people, schools, communities and partner organisations to raise awareness of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and other modern genocides. Our sporting and cultural activities empower participants by fostering respect, team spirit, critical thinking and resilience.

The Ishami Foundation gained charitable status in November 2019. The Foundation grew out of two earlier organisations: Football for Hope Peace and Unity, which used football as a tool to promote unity, reconciliation and development for young people in the UK and Rwanda, and Survivors Tribune, which supported genocide survivors in sharing their testimonies.

The Ishami Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees with a range of knowledge and experience in areas of social work, research, education, marketing and sport for peace and development. We are currently searching for new members to join the Board who have relevant experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Communications/marketing
  • Growing small charities
  • Fundraising
  • Social media and website experience
  • Emotional support and training volunteer speakers
  • Sport for social impact
  • Youth engagement

Becoming a member of the Board of Trustees

On a voluntary basis, trustees will help the Ishami Foundation consolidate and grow its work, becoming a sustainable organisation that uses the power of sport and storytelling to create change and empower communities.

Becoming a trustee is an opportunity to work with a growing charity that was founded and is led by genocide survivors, where your contributions will have real and visible impact on education, commemoration and the understanding of genocide and its prevention in the UK and abroad.

Time commitment can vary, but you will be required to commit to four Trustee Board meetings a year as well as occasional specific meetings, attendance at events and participation in the charity’s activities. For those with specific roles as trustees there might be more commitment to provide support to the Chief Executive Officer and volunteer staff on day-to-day activities.
