Genocide Prevention & Awareness Day

The United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted by the General Assembly on December 9th 1948.  After the Holocaust, this convention represented an international commitment to prevent the killing of innocent individuals because of their group identity. However, Genocides continued throughout the twentieth century in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur. The international community failed to prevent these crimes.

Since 2015, the United Nations has marked the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of the Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime, which is often referred to as Genocide Prevention and Awareness Day.

December 9th 2022 marks the 74th anniversary of the passing of the Genocide convention.

On this day, we remember victims of Genocide and encourage people around the world to learn from the past, and take action to prevent future atrocities.  Read more
