December 9th 2022 marks the 74th anniversary of the passing of the Genocide convention.
On this day, we remember victims of Genocide and encourage people around the world to learn from the past, and take action to prevent future atrocities.
Genocide is not over. The crime that took place in the Holocaust, Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur continues as you read this today. Today, other groups of people continue to live in a constant state of fear from genocidal violence, this is happening to Tutsi people from North and South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rohingya people in Myanmar, along with several other countries.
Please join us today to mark the International Genocide Prevention and Awareness Day by taking action, which you can do by learning about and talking about the crime of Genocide, sharing videos and statements that talks about the past or present Genocide stories, listening to Genocide survivor stories and engaging your governments to understand what exactly they are doing in relation to the prevention of the crime of Genocide home and abroad.
You can also find out more about the statement by Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, condemning hate speech, incitement, attacks on Kinyarwanda speaking Congolese people and the escalation in fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) here.
